Highland Oaks makes good use of the natural beauty of Ponca State Park's oak-covered hills.
Panoramic views of the Missouri River and surrounding terrain can make you forget about your score. At certain times of the day you are likely to run across a critter or two, like a deer or turkey.
Volunteer labor and community fund raising built the course and its cathedral-like, three-story clubhouse.
The course is carved from the oaks which can play havoc with your round.
The long fifth hole is generally considered the most difficult.
Highland Oaks is worth the trip.

Directions from Lincoln: From I-80, take Hwy 77 north 112 miles to Hwy 20. Go west to Hwy 9. Take Hwy 9 north to 3rd St. in Ponca. Turn right and go east 1 block on 3rd St. to Ponca State Park Rd. Turn left and go north about 1.5 miles to the entrance on your left.
Directions from Omaha: Take I-29 north 83 miles to Hwy 20. Continue as described above.
